Review | Life of Pi

Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Published by Random House of Canada in 2001
319 pages

"After the sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy names Pi, a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan —and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and beloved works of fiction in recent years.
Universally acclaimed upon publication, Life of Pi is a modern classic."

August 2012 Favourites

YouTuber:
elizziebooks! She recently put together an entire video compilation of book tubers welcoming other book tubers into the community! It was such a nice video to make and, at least in my case, it helped let people know who else was out there making book reviews and such. Without her having done that video, I wouldn't have gotten to the amount of subscribers that I now have on my YouTube channel, which I am so grateful for!

Film:
'Young Victoria'

I don't need to go too deep into this, but I love period dramas (I'm pretty sure that's a real thing) and this was no exception. I can watch this kind of film over and over and over again without ever getting tired.

The costumes in this were beautiful, as were the actors, and sets, and script, etc. It was such a pretty movie and was really well done. There wasn't a whole shit load of unnecessary drama or anything, for which I was so thankful for. It was just a nice, relaxed, romantic film to watch.

July 2012 Favourites

YouTuber:
Everyone who wished me luck with my dental surgery. It's the little things in life, people! :)

Film:
'Batman', 'Batman Returns', and 'Batman Forever' (the Tim Burton ones).

Guys. This is my new love. These three movies are so awesome! Gotham city has never felt like Gotham city until I saw these. I mean, seriously Dark Knight? You live in New York. I know you'd like to think that you live in Gotham city, but no. That city you live in, it's Manhattan island. But nice try.

This Gotham city, is a beautiful, gothic, deep coloured stone, ancient building looking city. The kind of city you would expect Batman to live in.

The characters were the funniest, most psychotic, most comic book, and most awesome characters ever. The Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler...These guys are what you expect when you hear their names. Not Halle Berry.

Also, Batman doesn't have all these stupid backstories that Hollywood likes to shove in there for no apparent reason (sorry Dark Knight) and ruin things and create complications that make no sense.

Plus it has music by Danny Elfman, and he just kicks everyones ass :)

This edition published by Houghton Mifflin Company, 2001

"If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler....In the following the path of this humble adventurer, you learn by the way (as he did) —if you do not already know all about these things— much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period."

June 2012 Favourites

YouTuber:
Leesha from Xsparkage
Leesha is a beauty guru on YouTube. She's the first genuine beauty guru that I ever discovered (two years ago) and her videos are what really boosted my interest in makeup. Lately she's been posting fewer videos, or at least on less of a schedule, but I feel like she's allowing more of her personality to show. Her videos are always fun to watch. Plus, her talent with bright, beautiful looks is beyond anything I've seen. She's forever a favourite.

Film:
The Alien Trilogy
This is the first time that I've ever seen any of those movies. I've immediately grown a soft spot for them and will most likely get offended if anyone insults them. Ripley is an incredibly awesome character and is, as of this month, my top heroine. The story was believable (for an alien movie lol) and I loved the way that they connect each movie to the other. Still have to watch all the other related movies!

Priscilla from The Readables
Hurray! This beautiful lady is actually the inspiration for beginning this entire project. As a graphic designer, she has the most quirky little "theme" sounds and effects. Her videos are well structured, short and to the point and in them she gives you all the information you could possibly need! I absolutely recommend her to anyone in search of new books to read.

Film:
The Avengers
Yeah, yeah, let me just take a moment to be lame here. As almost everyone I know who watched it, I adored The Avengers. I thought it was well structured, had a good soundtrack, a smooth, understandable plot, and amazing characters. All of the characters stayed true to their original movie characters and didn't do anything completely out of order in this movie. I did miss Edward Norton as the Hulk, but oh well!
